Face of the Canadian Veteran » 12 Nov. 2008

I have always been intrigued by war veterans, since a very young age. I was interested in their status as someone who has gone to the most dangerous place on Earth during their time. I would always look at their medals to figure out which distant land they had seen, and try to imagine what kind of stories they could tell.

I always wonder what goes on in the mind of a veteran on Remembrance Day. This year, I came closer to knowing. When I put down my cameras and paused for the moment of silence at 11 am, I pictured the face of Master Corporal Josh Roberts, whom I served with during my time in the Army. Josh was killed in Afghanistan by enemy small arms fire this past August.

During my moment of remembrance, I was thinking that it should not have happened to Josh. I wonder if other veterans, the ones pictured below, were thinking of their own fellow soldiers that they lost, and whether they thought death should not have happened to a single one of them.

They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
